Her widened eyes and the way Cinderella just shuts up at one crack of the voice-whip (and you can read on her face how defiant she feels and how much she just wants to put the old bag in her place) convey power like nothing else. I can't see her on the screen without shuddering, and it comes down to just how devastating it's implied the emotional abuse she's laid down on Cinderella really is. http://www.animecosplays.com/p-2015-disney-cinderella-princess-ella-dress-cosplay-costume-2512Disney Cinderella Princess Ella Dress Cosplay Costumehttp://www.animecosplays.com/p-2015-disney-cinderella-princess-ella-dress-cosplay-costume-2512noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1130024768875427937.post-66823533882042058032015-02-22T16:36:04.165-04:002015-02-22T16:36:04.165-04:00The Alice books have defeated pretty much every at...The Alice books have defeated pretty much every attempt at motion-picture adaptation, and I think you've identified at least one reason: they're episodic by nature, and grafting on an overarching plot just makes that more evident.

At some point, though, you should track down DREAMCHILD (1986), which depicts an aging Alice Hargreaves, the inspiration for Carroll's character, as she relives her childhood memories and recognizes, for the first time, what he was trying to say to her. It's written by Dennis Potter, and once you're recovered and have put doctors behind you, his brilliant miniseries "The Singing Detective" awaits.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1130024768875427937.post-19673428214394215702015-02-22T13:55:34.399-04:002015-02-22T13:55:34.399-04:00Had my ceiling partially fall in years ago. I ended up taping up plastic to the ceiling to at least get all the random drops into one stream. Leave a little slack, the weight of the water will find the lowest spot, poke a hole so it doesn't get too heavy. This required a lot of duct tape to hold the plastic up, but I eventually added a funnel and pipe to the kitchen sink so I didn't have to empty the bucket. Worked for two months, maybe more.
Good luck, ;-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1130024768875427937.post-37602292871355960912015-02-22T10:09:48.918-04:002015-02-22T10:09:48.918-04:00Oh shit. There's some great character design, but that's most of what it has to offer, lacking as it does the narrative space for the clever and sometimes esoteric stuff Lewis Caroll snuck into the source material.

It's not bad by any means, but it suffers from some glaring weaknesses that have no obvious solution.

I will defend the Unbirthday Song, though, on the basis of its instrumental backing, which is also used for the "Mad Tea Party" teacup ride at Disneyland, and consequently is an essential part of my mental happy place.Rachel Ghoulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04765944479141792643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1130024768875427937.post-10776342966019206012015-02-17T06:41:11.105-04:002015-02-17T06:41:11.105-04:00The dream song is called "A Dream Is a Wish Y...The dream song is called "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" (How imaginative of them, to title the song after its first line.) It and When You Wish Upon A Star are kind of the semi-official fanfares of the entire company now.

This is definitely a major transitional point for Disney, of course. You'll probably have caught up with a couple of the other ones from the 50s and seen how they develop from here.

I think in general the "princess" movies are where they really tend to step up their game in general, which is why they became popular enough to constitute a sort of franchise unto themselves. On the whole I like Snow White a little better out of the two you've seen but mostly because I feel like the mice are a little too filler-y-- the core of Cinderella is definitely equal and possibly better, and certainly Cinderella is certainly more of a treat to look at.

The choir thing persists through Disney's 1950s, but the opening songs do rather improve, in my opinion, after Alice.

I do hope being rained in will have the positive advantage of giving you some opportunity to catch up with the other three from this decade, they're some of my favorites.Rachel Ghoulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04765944479141792643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1130024768875427937.post-83934401818356958972015-02-14T00:40:11.776-04:002015-02-14T00:40:11.776-04:00Yeah, I think the book had plenty of funny verse t...Yeah, I think the book had plenty of funny verse that could be turned into songs; the trick was identifying the catchiest sayings, or the "memes" if you call them.Ryan Ferneauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17955330155998980272noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1130024768875427937.post-39634339060549799392015-02-13T04:18:31.173-04:002015-02-13T04:18:31.173-04:00Once more onto the beach, dear friend, once more!Once more onto the beach, dear friend, once more!Ryan Ferneauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17955330155998980272noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1130024768875427937.post-23189875007538159282015-02-11T21:59:55.487-04:002015-02-11T21:59:55.487-04:00Yeah, there are a lot of songs in this movie. The ...Yeah, there are a lot of songs in this movie. The opening title song is actually quite lovely as an instrumental, I once heard it played on harp very impressively. The big hits are "Golden Afternoon" and "The Unbirthday Song". By the way, if you think this was a lot of songs, you have no idea, they wrote something like 40 or 50 of them that ended up being scrapped during production. Alice was something of a favorite of Walt Disney, so he really wanted this movie to be a hit. It did... okay, and like Fantasia only really hit its stride once the hippies got a load of it.

Alice's voice actress, Kathryn Beaumont, continued to voice her as needed for decades; I think she only retired from it sometime in the last 5-6 years. As an adult she was also an English teacher, and from what I'm told she was a very engaging, popular one.

Other than that I don't have a lot to say about this movie. It's entertaining, but not one of my favorites-- like its source material it doesn't have much of a story to follow, just Alice wandering around encountering weirdness until she wakes up from her dream.Rachel Ghoulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04765944479141792643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1130024768875427937.post-77998608822957099052015-02-11T21:20:26.880-04:002015-02-11T21:20:26.880-04:00I may have mentioned on RPG.net, here is where you...I may have mentioned on RPG.net, here is where you may start to hear a lot of voice actor reuse. Already we've got J. Pat O'Malley as the Walrus, the Carpenter, and both Tweedles; and Bill Thompson is both the White Rabbit and the Dodo, and you should hear Bill Thompson's voice work in some more Disney films, though you may have already heard him if you've seen any of Tex Avery's Droopy cartoons for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. James MacDonald, the voice of the Dormouse, was also Cinderella's main mice and dog, and he took over some parts of Mickey Mouse's gang, including Chip of "Chip 'n' Dale", Humphrey the Bear, and Mickey himself.

And already you've heard the voice of the Cheshire Cat, Sterling Holloway, as Mr. Stork from Dumbo and adult Flower from Bambi, and you'll definitely hear him again. He and Jerry Colonna, the voice of the March Hare, also did some narration for some of the movies you skipped. Likewise, you already heard the voice of the Queen of Hearts, Verna Felton, as Mrs. Jumbo and the elephant matriarch from Dumbo and the fairy godmother from Cinderella, and would you believe she goes on to play another elephant and another fairy godmother for Disney?

(Looking at the credits for Dumbo, I saw some other prolific actors in bit parts, such as Jim Crow voiced by Cliff Edwards of Jiminy Cricket fame, and a clown voiced by Billy Bletcher, who I see had voice roles in a ton of shorts, including MGM's Barney Bear and Disney's own Pegleg Pete, the Big Bad Wolf, and Horace Horsecollar. And Marion Darlington just did bird noises for these early features... and Alice's crying?)Ryan Ferneauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17955330155998980272noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1130024768875427937.post-80532566771973153852015-02-11T19:02:30.096-04:002015-02-11T19:02:30.096-04:00If you can find it, Martin Gardner's "Ann...If you can find it, Martin Gardner's "Annotated Alice" is a terrific resource.
